The esplanade of Stirling Castle is the site for the town's biggest Hogmanay celebrations. Greeting 2008 will be The Proclaimers who will provide the headline entertainment to bid farewell to the old year.

Pantomime favourite Cinderella gets a musical makeover in one of Rossini's most popular operas, which comes to Falkirk Town Hall as part of Scottish Opera's tour. Harry Fehr directs a cast of young singers, accompanied by an instrumental ensemble from the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, conducted by Oliver Rundell.

The Alva Highland Games has been taking place since the 19th century and in 2006 celebrated its 150th gathering. It continues to be characterised by sports, including the "heavy" events, and the celebration of local culture - from whisky to bagpipes and tartans. Prize money for the winners totals over £5000, so all that training may well be worth it!

Although a relative youngster among its fellow Highland gatherings - it was first held in 1985 - the Stirling Games has gone from strength to strength and now attracts well over 5000 spectators from all over the globe to Bridgehaugh Rugby Park.
