Welcome the New Year in with this traditional Scottish Hogmanay Gala at Glasgow's Royal Concert Hall, with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Richard Balcombe. The "riotous celebration" is introduced by popular Scottish comedienne and tv star Joyce Falconer.
Although based in Glasgow, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra tours the country and also regularly plays in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. In 2000 the orchestra celebrated its 50th birthday as a professional band, coinciding with the reopening, after its long-awaited renovation, of the Usher Hall.
However, it can trace its history back to 1891 and the foundation of the Scottish Orchestra, which numbered conductors such as Max Bruch, Vaclav Talich, Sir John Barbirolli, George Szell and Walter Susskind before its reorganisation in 1950.
Under such conductors as Sir Alexander Gibson, Neeme Järvi, Bryden Thomson, Walter Weller and Alexander Lazarev the orchestra has gone from strength to strength. Since September 2005 French conductor Stéphane Denève has been music director.
