Originally known as Bellasses Park, then later the People's Park, Darlington's South Park covers an impressive 26 hectares, and gets its current name from the simple fact that it is south of the town centre. It has recently undergone a £4 million restoration and refurbishment to secure its place at the heart of the town's recreational facilities.
The park's lake, fed by the River Skerne, is home to ducks, geese and swans. The major restoration included the draining, dredging and re-building of the lake, the planting of thousands of new trees and shrubs, the restoration of the bandstand and the Terracotta Fountain and the creation of a new Sensory Garden, as well as providing new state-of-the-art facilities for a kids' play park, a multi-purpose ball court and a skateboard park.
With an aviary and sports facilities, the park is also the site of many large events, such as the annual dog show (displaced in 2005 for the refurbishment) and bonfire night fireworks.
