Tetbury Woolsack Races

May 2009 (annual)

Tetbury holds an extraordinary annual event on May Bank Holiday. Locals arrange themselves into teams of four and, in pairs, relay a 60lb woolsack (35lb for ladies) up and down Gumstool Hill between the Crown and the Royal Oak pubs.

The course is 280 yards long, up and down a hill which has a 1 in 4 gradient, so the record of 3.5 minutes is no mean feat!

The Woolsack Races form the central attraction of a fund-raising day which includes an all-day street market, a charity auction, a village fete, street entertainers, marching bands and entertainment for all the family.

Gumstool Hill is one of Tetbury's most ancient streets. Legend has it the bottom of the hill was once a pool where miscreants were tied to a ducking stool or "gumstool" and ducked under water as punishment.
