Against the spectacular backdrop of Edinburgh Castle, over 800 performers and 30 horses fill the city with the beat of marching bands, thrilling military re-enactments and daredevil stunts, as well as the haunting refrain of the last post and the lone piper. The Edinburgh Tattoo has been a must since its first outing in 1950 and its blend of military bands and displays, including an eclectic mix of international visitors, never fails to please.

While the official Edinburgh International Festival concentrates on what some like to call "the high arts," the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival is more eclectic, developing out of a spontaneous, grass-roots response to the international high-flyers up the road. With a whisker short of 1.7 million tickets sold for 31,000 performances of 2050 shows in over 250 venues given by some 19,000 individual participants, 2007's 60th birthday celebrations, under the auspices of new Fringe director Jon Morgan, certainly showed that the Fringe is still growing even past retirement age!

The Edinburgh International Book Festival is one of the biggest literary festivals in the English-speaking world. In 2007 some 600 writers came to Charlotte Square Gardens to appear in 700 events in just 17 days. They read from and discuss their work, while book tents sell all the latest titles and there are also lectures, panel discussions and book signings.
