Durham's Old Fulling Mill now houses archaeological material, mostly from north-east England, but also from the Swiss Lakes, Ancient Greece and Rome. Historically, the collections reflect Durham University's academic interests and excavations.

The collections remain a source for teaching and research, but active collecting is mainly restricted to archaeological material from Durham City district. Among the more striking exhibits are the reconstructed stone cist from Brandon, with its finely decorated beaker, a major collection of Roman inscriptions from the north of England and an outstanding collection of Samian ware.

There are also some exceptionally well-preserved Medieval finds from Durham City, including fine examples of pottery, leatherwork, wooden artefacts and a bone skate, as well as material from the priors' residence at Beaurepaire and Finchale Priory.

Please note that from November to March the museum is only open on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
